Successful Gorse Management
Step 1
Establish your realistic time frame and budget. You may wish to break the project down into sections, phases or percentages
Step 2
Biomass reduction. Mulching the gorse down to a fine ground level is important for a number of reasons.
- Reducing biomass also reduces the amount of chemical required for the follow up spray.
- A fine, even mulched material on the ground helps to supress regrowth
- A fine mulching process removes any large stems which are capable of regrowth. Once regrowth occurs on stems the surface area is small, greatly reducing chemical uptake and effectiveness of the follow up spray.
- Stalky stems are a night mare for any spray contractors’ tyres
Step 3
Spray the regrowth when it is approximate 5 to 6 inches high.
Step 4
Don’t let it get away again. Continue to manage the regrowth by spraying in years to come when it is small. Slash or mulch if the regrowth gets above 3 to 4 foot and then return to the spraying phase.
